Internal links that help customers take the next step

An internal link is a route through your own website. Its first job is to help a reader continue a useful task.

Choose a purposeful destination

Link from a services overview to relevant detail. From a guide, offer the next explanation or service that fits the question. The surrounding sentence should explain the connection; an unrelated sales destination can interrupt the decision.

Make the link understandable

Use a descriptive label rather than several identical click-here links. Check that normal crawlable links lead to working final addresses. A footer supports discovery, while a contextual link explains why a page matters at that point in the reading.

Keep backlinks separate

A link in your own footer is not an endorsement from another website. Record internal navigation and external referring links separately. When checking a destination, distinguish a confirmed404 or410 from a timeout, access restriction or temporary failure.
