The VL blog

An AI mention is not the same as a citation

An assistant may name a business without linking to it. A linked source may not lead to a useful visit or enquiry.

Mention: a business nameUnderstand the starting point
Citation: a linked supporting pageChoose and verify a useful next step

Record the observation

Keep the question, answer date, platform or sampling method and visible source address. Confirm the answer refers to the right company. Similar names and locations can make an apparently positive mention irrelevant.

Make comparisons repeatable

Use the same question set and disclose method changes. If a later sample omits the brand, do not infer that it disappeared from every answer. A screenshot supports one observation; it does not establish a representative recommendation rate or market share.

Review the destination

If someone arrives, the cited page still needs to answer their question and support a useful next action. A citation count is not a completed enquiry. VL's bounded AI samples are research evidence, not a live view of every person's ChatGPT or Google experience.
